Preanesthetic Anxiety & Nausea Relief

We are sending home one or more of the following pre-surgical medications for you to give your pet prior to their anesthetic procedure. These oral medications help to minimize your pet’s stress level and also reduce nausea/vomiting that can be associated with anesthesia, leading to an overall safer and less stressful surgery day for your pet.

Maropitant (Cerenia)

This oral tablet medication controls nausea and vomiting in dogs and cats, and takes up to an hour after administration before it is effective.

Many of the medications used in-hospital during an anesthetic event can contribute to or cause vomiting. By starting this anti-nausea medication early at home, we can avoid this uncomfortable side effect.

Trazodone

This oral tablet medication helps relieve short term stress in dogs and sometimes cats, and takes up to two hours after administration before it is effective.

Stress can increase the amount of anesthetic medications needed during a procedure, which thereby increases anesthetic risk. By reducing stress in our patients before they get to the clinic, we can provide a more positive experience for them while also minimize negative side effects from anesthesia.

Gabapentin

This medication, available in both oral capsule and oral liquid formulations, works in conjunction with Trazodone to reduce short term stress and it also provides some pain control in dogs and cats. It takes up to two hours after administration before it is effective.
